Matthews student perseveres, receives Air Force Academy appointment
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HOMESCHOOLED STUDENT FROM MATTHEWS RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY APPOINTMENT
WASHINGTON – Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09) is honored to announce that Lelyand Cathey, a homeschool scholar from Matthews, has received a prestigious appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Mr. Cathey is a great example of perseverance. After receiving a nomination in 2016, he was not ultimately appointed to the U.S. Air Force Academy. He spent the past year working hard to further prepare himself, applied again, and this year was rewarded with an appointment.
“I believe it is my calling to serve my country and its people. I cannot recall a time where I was not inspired by servicemen and women, and the duties they perform,” explained Mr. Cathey. “The superb education and leadership training offered at the service academies, in particular the United States Air Force Academy, would be the key to serving at the utmost limits of my capabilities.”
Mr. Cathey is the son of Elise and Charles Cathey and lives in Matthews.
“Lelyand’s perseverance is inspiring, said Congressman Pittenger. “In life, we will often face setbacks. Those who are successful get back up and try again. Congratulations to Lelyand on this tremendous honor.”
Mr. Cathey is one of seventeen local students to receive prestigious U.S. Service Academy appointments for the 2016-2017 school year. Local students interested in applying for next academic year should contact Congressman Pittenger’s office at 704-362-1060 to learn more about the rigorous nomination process.
