CONGRESSMAN PITTENGER REACTS TO US AIRWAYS – DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE SETTLEMENT
WASHINGTON – Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09) shared these comments after learning of a settlement in the Department of Justice-US Airways/American Airlines merger dispute.
“In the absence of genuine legal or ethical concerns, consumers should always be the judge of the merits of a business merger, not Washington bureaucrats. Considering the Department of Justice has approved several similar airline mergers, it was never very clear why they so strenuously objected to this one.
“Charlotte-Douglas International Airport is critical to the continued economic success of the Charlotte region, and I will continue to do everything possible to support the airport, its infrastructure, and the airlines who serve Charlotte. This includes strong support for the vital new international intermodal transport facility, which will create thousands of new jobs over the next 20 years.
“Since August, I have repeatedly urged the Department of Justice to allow the merger to proceed. The cloud of uncertainty which has hung over both airline employees and economic development efforts in Charlotte has been lifted."
