WEDDINGTON SENIOR RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS WEST POINT APPOINTMENT

WASHINGTON – Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09) is happy to announce that Caroline Horne, a senior at Weddington High School, has received a prestigious appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Ms. Horne founded and serves as president of the Weddington Mentors Club, which organizes high school students to serve as mentors at the Monroe Boys and Girls Club.  She also launched “Hope for the Holidays” to provide Christmas gifts for children at the Boys and Girls Club.

“At a Memorial Day presentation several years ago, I interacted with an older gentleman, a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.  While watching another veteran perform Taps from his wheelchair, he became overcome with emotion; his sense of patriotism, commitment, and selfless service moved and inspired me,” recalled Ms. Horne.  “My grandfathers were driven by the same sense of duty and honor to serve in the United States military.  It is that same responsibility and duty I feel to serve my country in the U.S. military and pursue a military education at a United States service academy.”

Ms. Horne is the daughter of Laura Horne and Peter Horne and lives in Union County.

“Caroline is a remarkable young leader.  How many high school students launch two charities, while also serving in student government and as captain of the soccer team?” said Congressman Pittenger.  “The United States is blessed to have young leaders like Caroline who are dedicated to serving our country.”

Ms. Horne is one of fourteen local students to receive prestigious U.S. Service Academy appointments for the 2016-2017 school year.  Congressman Pittenger will host two “Service Academy Days” later this spring in Charlotte and Fayetteville to give local students the opportunity to learn about the rigorous nomination process.  Call 704-362-1060 for details.
