Charlotte Catholic graduate fulfills dream, receives appointment to Naval Academy
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CHARLOTTE CATHOLIC GRADUATE DREAMED OF NAVAL ACADEMY SINCE AGE 9, NOW RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS APPOINTMENT
WASHINGTON – Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09) is pleased to announce that Nick Derrico, a recent graduate of Charlotte Catholic, has received a prestigious appointment to the United States Naval Academy.
Mr. Derrico played varsity football and lacrosse, served as president of his freshman class, and played the Beast in the school production of “Beauty and the Beast.”
“I’ve wanted this since I was 9. Now, I know how cliché that must sound. I can’t even begin to imagine how many applicants lead off with the trite, ‘Ever since I was in the womb, I’ve dreamed of attending the Naval Academy.’ Despite this, I genuinely did not see any other way to embody the nature my desire to serve our country other than to display how deeply this desire runs,” explained Mr. Derrico.
Mr. Derrico is the son of Paul Derrico and Julie Derrico and lives in Charlotte.
“When I was 9, I was interested in staying home from school to watch the New York Yankees on TV,” commented Congressman Pittenger. “One of the greatest joys and privileges of my job is getting to meet remarkable students like Nick and playing a small part in their development as America’s next generation of leaders.”
Mr. Derrico is one of seventeen local students to receive prestigious U.S. Service Academy appointments for the 2016-2017 school year. Students interested in applying for the next academic year should contact Congressman Pittenger’s office at 704-362-1060.
