CONGRESSMAN PITTENGER CONGRATULATES WINNER OF CONGRESSIONAL ART COMPETITION

CHARLOTTE – Sabrina Collias, a junior at Myers Park High School, is the winner of the 2014 Congressional Art Competition.  Her watercolor, titled “Dynamic Duo,” was judged best entry by Congressman Robert Pittenger, his staff, and an expert from the Art Institute of Charlotte.

“Ms. Collias is a model of perseverance and demonstrates a strong desire to succeed in life,” said Congressman Pittenger (NC-09).  “She was last year’s first runner-up, and while disappointed at not winning, chose to take advantage of the scholarship she received, work hard, and try again this year.

“Every one of the 28 students who entered displayed tremendous talent, and we should all be proud of the great students and great teachers from the 9th Congressional District.”

As the winner of the 2014 Congressional Art Competition, Ms. Collias’ artwork will be displayed in a busy corridor of the U.S. Capitol for one year.  She’ll also receive a scholarship offer from a prestigious southeastern arts university, a full scholarship to a summer art studio program in Charlotte, and two complimentary airline tickets to fly her and a guest to Washington to attend a reception in her honor.

Elaina Cloninger of Charlotte Christian was named runner-up for her artwork, titled “Want to Play?”  Katie Zhao of Ardrey Kell High School was named runner-up for her artwork, titled “Chinese Cherries.”  Both will receive full scholarships to the summer art studio program.

Additional finalists were Britton Edwards, a junior from Charlotte Christian; Chloe Lee, a sophomore at Charlotte Christian; and Baxter Bradbury, also a sophomore at Charlotte Christian.

An album displaying all 28 entries from this year’s competition is available on Congressman Pittenger’s Facebook page (Facebook.com/CongressmanPittenger).  More than 40,000 have already viewed the artwork.

The 2014 Congressional Art Competition is carried out at no expense to the Federal Government.  All expenses are provided locally in the community.
