MORE THAN 50 MEMBERS OF HOUSE AND SENATE JOIN CONGRESSMAN PITTENGER TO URGE POSTAL SERVICE TO SUPPORT VETERANS AND “STAMP OUT PTSD”
CHARLOTTE – Since 2007, North Carolina Navy veteran Garland Denny has waged a long and often lonely fight, advocating for a special postage stamp to raise money for veteran services.
Today, Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09) and 55 Members of the House and Senate wrote the United States Postmaster General in support of Mr. Denny’s effort, urging the creation of a “Stamp Out PTSD” semi-postal stamp to raise money for PTSD research and treatment for our nation’s veterans.
The USPS currently sells two semi-postal stamps, raising money for breast cancer research and endangered species. While Congress gave USPS full authority to create additional semi-postal stamps in 2005, the USPS has declined to use that authority.
“According to the VA, up to twenty percent of veterans who served in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom experience PTSD,” writes Congressman Pittenger in the letter co-signed by 55 colleagues. “The creation of the ‘Stamp Out PTSD’ semipostal stamp, which will benefit our Nation’s veterans, is certainly in the national public interest and appropriate.
“We look forward to working closely with you in this effort to support the brave men and women who served our Nation and laid such a costly sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.”
Congressman Pittenger has worked with Mr. Denny since taking office in 2013, including arranging meetings with the White House and the U.S. Postal Service to discuss the proposal.
“Mr. Denny is a true and dedicated patriot who recognized a need and has dedicated his time and resources to meeting that need,” commented Congressman Pittenger. “We are honored to support Mr. Denny on this important project.”
