FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

2016 CONGRESSIONAL ART COMPETITION WILL SEND ONE LOCAL STUDENT’S ART FOR DISPLAY IN U.S. CAPITOL

CHARLOTTE – Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09) is excited to once again showcase talented local students through the 2016 Congressional Art Competition.  Open to high school students in North Carolina’s current 9th Congressional District, the first-place artwork will be displayed in a busy corridor of the U.S. Capitol for one year.

“Each year I am amazed by the incredible entries from local students, and my staff and I always make sure to point out the first place entry as we escort visitors around the Capitol,” said Congressman Pittenger.  “Our community is blessed with so many amazing students, and they deserve to be recognized.”

Artwork may be dropped off at Congressman Pittenger’s offices in Charlotte and Mooresville during normal business hours through April 4th.  The community will be invited to help select five finalists via a Facebook competition (facebook.com/CongressmanPittenger) from April 5th through April 12th.  A sixth “wild card” finalist will be chosen by a professional art instructor.

The first place winner will be chosen from the six finalists by Congressman Pittenger, his staff, and local art experts.  The first place winner will receive the Congressional Art Award:

  • The winning entry will hang in the U.S. Capitol building for one year.
  • The student will receive a scholarship offer from a prestigious arts university.
  • The student and a guest will be flown to Washington, D.C. to attend the national reception and view their artwork in the Capitol.

The other five finalists will have their artwork displayed in Congressman Pittenger’s office.  First, second, and third place finalists will receive complimentary admission to a summer art studio program in Charlotte.

The 2016 Congressional Art Competition is carried out at no expense to the Federal Government.  All expenses are paid for locally in the community.  For more information, complete rules, and entry forms, go to Pittenger.House.gov/ArtCompetition or call 704-362-1060.

Due to House Ethics rules, Congressman Pittenger is only allowed to accept entries from the current 9th Congressional District (Union, Mecklenburg, Iredell).  Students from the proposed 9th District will need to submit entries via their current Congressman for 2016.
